WordPress 2.6.1 is out — not necessary to upgrade

Hey all, just a quick note:  you’be probably noticed by now that a new version of WordPress, 2.6.1 is out.  This mostly is just a pile of small bugfixes, with no security improvements.  So, if you’re running 2.6 and not having any trouble, you don’t need to upgrade.  There aren’t any major feature enhancemnets, either.

However, if you are still running 2.3.x or lower, you REALLY should upgrade.  That is all.

I was under the impression that Bluehost would upgrade wordpress on their end, so I didn’t need to do that manually anymore? I could be wrong.

if you’re ever sitting around wondering what to write about, I’m curious to hear some of your thoughts about Bluehost and why you recommend them. it’s a pretty daunting task, weighing host options.

@–Christine: no, Bluehost does not upgrade wordpress for you. they do have a feature called “simple scripts” which might do upgrades for you if you used it to install wordpress, but i’m not sure.

i recommend bluehost because 1) they’re cheap, 2) they’re WordPress tools and control panel tools are very good, 3) you can get a support person on the phone usually in less than 5 minutes. they’re definitely budget/shared hosting, but for most people that’s all they need. i run all my sites (including this one) on bluehost.

some good news is that wordpress is getting very close to having an automatic upgrader built into the core, so at some point (i’d guess within 6 months) wordpress will be able to upgrade itself.

@John Blair: 2.6.2 is just a minor security improvement that really only helps people who have open registration turned on in their blogs, which none of you should have. so, it’s safe to skip this update.
